Fundação de Medicina Tropical do Amazonas – FMT
The Amazonas Tropical Medicine Foundation (Fundação de Medicina Tropical do Amazonas - FMTAM) in Manaus was initially set up in 1970. On the 30th December 1998 and it was decreed a Foundation. The hospital has a central laboratory with 14 consulting rooms, specialized laboratories and supporting infrastructure, and in-patient wards. The teaching and research centre, which covers 4.000m2, develops activities through the Directorate for Research, Directorate for Endemic Disease Control and other directorates. The FMT is considered to be a National and International Reference Centre for Tropical diseases. The medical specialties that are provided at the FMT include: arbovirology, bacteriology, tropical dermatology, STI/HIV/AIDS, Entomology, Leishmaniasis, Malaria, Mycology, Snake bites, Parasitology and virology. The director of the Foundation, Dr Sinesio Talahari (dermatologist and specialist in Hansen’s disease), is an long-time contact of IS Brazil through a previous IS partnership with the State Hansen’s control Programme.
